GOLD

Becky Patterson was getting dressed. She had just gotten out of the shower, and was getting ready to meet her friend, Pam Snyder. Both girls were from Redding, California, and they planned to go to out to Whiskeytown Lake for the weekend.

Pam had met some guy at the bar that employed her. He played guitar, and he was going to Whiskeytown this weekend, too, but separately. Pam had the hots for the guy, but she wasn’t sure enough about the man to go alone. Pam had learned a couple of hard lessons while working at the bar. So, Becky was tagging along, too, as moral support and a way to bail out if necessary.

Becky and Pam had been best friends since fifth grade, and still were. Both women were blonde, and both were very attractive. After high school, neither girl’s family could afford to send them to college, so they went to work. At first, both were working for a grocery store chain. When Pam turned twenty-one, she went to work for the bar as a waitress. She made good money, often bringing home more money than Becky during certain weeks. Tips were good, but Becky had just made cashier manager, which included a raise along with the responsibility. The girls had been roommates since about six months after they had started working, and their friendship had remained solid.

Now twenty-two, both young women were wondering if there was more to life than work and going out every weekend.

Pam crashed through the front door, in a hurry as always. “Becky! Beck-eee! Are you ready yet? We have to get there before nightfall, so we can see how to put up the tent!”

“Almost done, Pam, hold on,” replied Becky. I’ll enjoy the trip to the lake, she thought, but I don’t want to be a fifth wheel. So, I want to go, and I don’t. Go figure. “Is the car all loaded, Pamdunk?” Becky asked, using Pam’s old high school nickname.

“All is loaded except for your suitcase, Becky-the-deck,” said Pam.

Both women began giggling.

When the laughing slowed down, Becky began putting on her makup. “I’m not feeling a hundred percent about this trip, Pam.”

Pam stood in the bathroom doorway, looking at Becky’s reflection. “Why, Becky?”

Becky shook her head. “I don’t know. It’s nothing I can put my finger on.”

“Should we just stay home this weekend? Maybe catch a movie?” asked Pam.

Becky actually considered this for a moment. “No, we’ll go. Maybe that feeling will go away later.”

“You sure, Becky?”

Becky nodded. “Sure. I don’t want to be the death of a possible relationship!” She shivered. Goose walked over my grave.

True to Northern Califonia cliches, the car they were taking was a late-model Volkswagen Beetle convertible. It was Becky’s, although both girls used it. It had a special rack on the back that allowed the girls to bring their bicycles. The back seat was piled high with a tent, camping gear, food, a camp stove, a cooler filled with ice and cold food, and suitcases.

The ride to Whiskeytown Lake was pleasant.
